Table Conventions (Cont) • Tables should be compact – should not spread across a page • Use letters for identifying footnotes (e.g. a, b, c…) • Numbers could be mistaken for to the power of symbol (e.g. 10 2 could be mistaken for × 100) • Symbols not good as can end up with a long list (e.g. *, **, †, ††, ǂ) • Use of horizontal lines should be restricted to 2 or 3 horizontal rules to separate • Title and table box; • Column headings and table body; and • Table body and footnotes
