No Added Matter Requirement

• After filing of a patent application, cannot add new matter to the application – You are allowed to modify the claims and make non-substantive changes to the rest of the patent application

• Any modification of claims must have a basis in the application as originally filed

– Follow-on applications, to preserve the priority date of the parent patent application, are also subject to this rule
