ENGAGING THE MIND OF THE AUDIENCE

❑ When presenting, it is essential that you step into the other person’s world (frame of reference) – we like people who are like us as we experience familiarity. ❑ The word “you” and “your” are the two most

influential words in the English language. If you find yourself sa ying “I” a lot, you may lose your audience . ❑ Speak their language. ❑ Fit your solutions to their plans/objectives/needs/problems. ❑ Empathy is a great rapport and relationship builder. It gives you a better understanding of another person and why they do the things they do. ❑ Involve the group wherever possible (and where appropriate). Ask questions that make them feel involved. Ask for input.

❑ Get the audience doing something that is relevant to your content. ❑ Break the audience into subgroups to discuss an issue/question. ❑ Tell them the benefits to them. ❑ Give examples of what you are talking about. ❑ Refer to members of the audience (where appropriate).
