Definitions: 1

Pharmacokinetics (PK) ● The mathematical description of the time course of the movement drugs into, around and out of the body – i.e. the A bsorption, D istribution, M etabolism and E xcretion of drugs ( ADME ) ● What the body does to the drug

Pharmacodynamics (PD) ● What the drug and/or its metabolite(s) do to the body – desired - therapeutic or beneficial response – undesired - adverse or toxicological response Clinical Pharmacology • Science of linking the PK and PD of a drug

• Building a body of knowledge about the processes by which a drug enters, moves around and leaves the body (PK) and interacts with its sites of action and sites of toxicity (PD) • Exploring and understanding the factors which influence the exposure and response of the drug in the clinical setting, to ensure the correct clinical dose
